Why Your Dryer Takes Three Cycles To Dry One Load

Long dry times are usually a venting problem, not a broken dryer — and a packed vent is a genuine fire hazard.
When customers tell us the dryer "still works, it is just slow," the dryer itself is rarely the problem.
Airflow is everything
A dryer works by moving heated air through the drum and out the vent. Restrict that airflow anywhere along the path and drying time doubles or triples while the machine still heats normally.
Check, in order: the lint screen (clean it every load), the transition hose behind the dryer (crushed hoses are extremely common), the duct run through the wall, and the exterior flap — birds nest in them constantly in Oklahoma.
When it is the dryer
If airflow is good and clothes still come out damp, suspect a weak heating element, a failed thermostat or a moisture sensor reading wrong. Gas dryers add igniters and flame sensors to the list.
The safety part
Lint is fuel. A blocked vent traps heat in the cabinet, and every year that causes house fires. If your dryer cabinet feels very hot or you smell scorching, stop using it.
