Refrigerator Not Cooling? Five Things To Check Before You Call
July 8, 2024 · Alliance Appliance Repair
Warm fridge, cold freezer? Compressor running nonstop? Here are the five checks we make on every refrigerator no-cool call in Stillwater.
A refrigerator that stops cooling costs you a full grocery load in under a day. Before you call, five quick checks tell you a lot.
1. Condenser coils
Dusty or pet-hair-packed coils are the single most common cause of poor cooling. Unplug the fridge and vacuum the coils underneath or behind the unit.
2. Airflow inside
If the fridge is warm but the freezer is still cold, the problem is almost always airflow — a failed evaporator fan or a defrost system that has iced the coil solid. Listen for the fan when you press the door switch.
3. Door seals
Close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides out with no resistance, the gasket is leaking humid air into the cabinet and the compressor will never catch up.
4. Temperature settings and overpacking
A fridge crammed full blocks the vents in the back wall. Leave a few inches of clearance around the air outlets.
5. Compressor behavior
A compressor that runs constantly and never cycles off usually means a sealed-system or control fault. That is where a technician's gauges and meter earn their keep.
