Ice Machine Making Cloudy Or Small Cubes
If your ice machine is producing cloudy or undersized cubes, it’s a sign of internal issues. Learn how to diagnose water flow, scale, and mechanical failures.
Practical troubleshooting written by the technicians who do the repairs. Every article here comes out of jobs we ran in Oklahoma homes, restaurants, rentals and campus kitchens — what the symptom usually means, what you can safely check yourself, and the point where the fix needs a meter, a gauge set or a gas-certified technician.

Most appliance problems fall into a small number of repeating patterns. These are the ones that fill our schedule week after week, and the ones our guides keep coming back to.
Dirty condenser coils, a stalled condenser fan, a failed defrost heater or thermistor, and sealed-system leaks all look identical from the kitchen — the food gets warm. Telling them apart is a matter of where the frost forms and what the compressor is doing.
Nine times out of ten this is airflow, not heat: a clogged lint path or a crushed vent duct. The remaining cases are a failed heating element, a blown thermal fuse, or a cycling thermostat that opens too early.
Coins and hairpins in the drain pump filter, a kinked drain hose, a worn lid switch, or a pump that has stopped priming. Front-loaders add door-lock and out-of-balance faults to the list.
Modern dishwashers have a user-serviceable filter that almost nobody knows about. Once that is ruled out, look at the spray-arm jets, the water inlet valve, and the heating element that drives the final rinse temperature.
Weak bake elements, failed igniters that glow but never pull the safety valve open, and drifting temperature sensors are the usual causes of undercooked food and long preheats.
Ice machines scaling up, fryers drifting out of calibration, walk-in evaporators icing over and dish machines failing sanitize temperature behave differently than home appliances because they run all day. We cover those failures separately.
